WHO ARE MANZAMIGOS???

Manzamigos originated in the year 2000, as the result of a brainstorming meeting of Rogelio Rueda,  Mayor of Manzanillo, Guillermo Gomez, Gen. Mgr of Tema Nissan, Manzanillo and the late Bill Ziener, US Consular Warden for the Costa Alegre, along with the heads of the various departments pertinent to the needs of tourists and the foreign population of the area.

In 2001, Nigel Rumford was elected President and commenced on the journey towards what is now Manzamigos A.C. his main objective being to form a helpful and cohesive foreign community base. It was a difficult beginning as there were by then only the 5 members who actively formed the Association, the original members, being too busy to continue on a regular basis.

This past February, Gerry Szakacs took over from Nigel Rumford (after 7 years) as President of the Association and is actively looking for more suggestions as to what could make Manzamigos A.C. more interesting and helpful to everyone.

Since it’s origin, Manzamigos A.C. has developed regular newsletters and a website, has printed 2 books of great value to the visitors to the area and grown to a membership of close to 250 active memberships. This past year, the membership actually doubled.

“Thirsty Thursday”, an evening where we get together at local restaurants, celebrates it’s fifth birthday next October and from the initial dozen or so participants in the high season, now regularly sees close to 40 at every off season function and almost 100 in season. (The season is November till Easter.)  This has become one of the main events in Manzanillo for foreign residents as people meet interesting people and make friends. What is so nice about this evening is that everyone mixes very well, welcomes people joining in for the first time and there are no cliques.

Each year, Manzamigos A.C  assists the city of Manzanillo in Christmas parties for underprivileged children and joins in the Carnivale Parade in  February or March at the onset of Lent, where they (this year) distributed over 60 kilos of candy.

Important Update on

Passports for USA/Canadian travel
Delay in works for US passport plan The U.S. House of Representa

-tives has approved a

17-month delay in the passport requirement

for Canadians entering the US by car or ferry. Subject to a “rubber-stamp” approval from

the Senate, the

Homeland Security Department will now implement the plan on June 1, 2009. The delay, however, does

not affect travellers entering the US by plane or ship – they

 will still require a

passport as of Jan. 1, 2007.

If you plan on DRIVING

to Mexico before June 2009, you can still use your US or Canadian Drivers License as identification for crossing back into the US. You

 will NOT need a

passport for driving or walking across the

border back into the US until June 2009.

The Mexico Tourism Board is reminding Canadians that they

don’t need a passport to visit Mexico. The

reminder comes in the wake of the United

States now requiring Canadians travelling to that country by air to

have a passport. “A passport is always suggested (for visiting Mexico), but not needed,” says Cesar Castaneda of the board’s Toronto office. “Citizens of Canada may enter Mexico holding their original birth certificate – assuming they were

born in the same country – and currently valid photo ID or citizenship

card.”

Bindardundat note: Due to personal experience, and a note from the Canadian Government, passports are now taking 60+ business days.  So if you are planning on renewing your passports when you go back to Canada, best to allow lots of time.

Thirsty Thursdays

Thirsty Thursdays was started to provide an English-speaking community base, and has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.
Regularly there are about 20 people who enjoy each other’s company on a Thursday evening but this has grown to almost 100 in the season. There is always someone new to meet and many firm friendships have been made.
For current information contact Gerry at 335-1343 or for email, click Email Gerry

JOIN MANZAMIGOS

Over the summer months we have met many people who have moved to Manzanillo from other areas and have enjoyed their company immensely.
Thirsty Thursday was set up to create a place for people to meet and make friends amongst the foreign community and in this aspect it is a huge success.

Membership is not a requirement to come to Thirsty Thursday now, nor will it ever be, so please everyone feel free to join us any time you wish.
However, we ask you to consider helping Manzamigos by taking a family membership for only 250 pesos per year.
Your membership fees can help us repeat the gestures of friendship towards the City that
has given us so much. Absolutely none of the funds that we have raised in any project goes to any individual, apart from expenses occurred in the course of producing that project.
