WHO ARE MANZAMIGOS???

Manzamigos A.C. is a non-profit organization, which has committed itself to assisting both Foreign and National communities, as well as creating situations for people new to the area to meet others who have made the big decision to live in Manzanillo.
Last year we aided the City of Manzanillo in a Christmas Party for underprivileged Children. For this event, between us all, we managed to clothe 50 children, gave gifts for 100 children, provided candies for 300 children, as well as giving a sizeable donation.
In February we joined in the Carnivale Parade on Shrove Tuesday and distributed more than 45 kilos of candies to the young people of the City, which was a fantastic experience for everyone taking part. It is hoped that both of these will become annual events where we can show our appreciation to the citizens of Manzanillo.
For the past 5 years we have produced a book of translations to assist non-Spanish speaking people in shopping and are reaching the final stages of a second book that is aimed at the local restaurant business. Our web page is up and running beautifully, advising everyone of what’s happening, what’s available, and what to take precautions against and the monthly newsletter is starting to become a voice that the community needs as so many people contribute to it’s content.
In order to do all these things and consider what more would help, we need a base income from which to work and are most grateful to those people who have helped us both by becoming members and participating in our ventures.

Wishing all our friends a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR! and a very prosperous and fullfilling 2008

Important Update on

Passports for USA/Canadian travel
Delay in works for US passport plan The U.S. House of Representa

-tives has approved a

17-month delay in the passport requirement

for Canadians entering the US by car or ferry. Subject to a “rubber-stamp” approval from

the Senate, the

Homeland Security Department will now implement the plan on June 1, 2009. The delay, however, does

not affect travellers entering the US by plane or ship – they

 will still require a

passport as of Jan. 1, 2007.

If you plan on DRIVING

to Mexico before June 2009, you can still use your US or Canadian Drivers License as identification for crossing back into the US. You

 will NOT need a

passport for driving or walking across the

border back into the US until June 2009.

The Mexico Tourism Board is reminding Canadians that they

don’t need a passport to visit Mexico. The

reminder comes in the wake of the United

States now requiring Canadians travelling to that country by air to

have a passport. “A passport is always suggested (for visiting Mexico), but not needed,” says Cesar Castaneda of the board’s Toronto office. “Citizens of Canada may enter Mexico holding their original birth certificate – assuming they were

born in the same country – and currently valid photo ID or citizenship

card.”

Bindardundat note: Due to personal experience, and a note from the Canadian Government, passports are now taking 60+ business days.  So if you are planning on renewing your passports when you go back to Canada, best to allow lots of time.

JOIN MANZAMIGOS

Over the summer months we have met many people who have moved to Manzanillo from other areas and have enjoyed their company immensely.
Thirsty Thursday was set up to create a place for people to meet and make friends amongst the foreign community and in this aspect it is a huge success.

Membership is not a requirement to come to Thirsty Thursday now, nor will it ever be, so please everyone feel free to join us any time you wish.
However, we ask you to consider helping Manzamigos by taking a family membership for only 250 pesos per year.
Your membership fees can help us repeat the gestures of friendship towards the City that
has given us so much. Absolutely none of the funds that we have raised in any project goes to any individual, apart from expenses occurred in the course of producing that project.

Thirsty Thursday

We dined at Toscanas thursday night. We enjoyed a special of chicken kabobs, shrimp kabobs, salad, vegetables and ice cream for desert. Oh, we also enjoyed the free margarita we were served. There were fifty eight of us.

It continues to be a problem that some people do not notify me and we have

more that I tell the restaurant owner. When he is preparing a buffet or a

special it can be a problem with enough food.

We will be going to Roca del Mar next week and Portofino's the following

week.

Please make sure to advise Sharon if you will be going..

Beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at El Caribe Restaurant in Las Brisas, professional entertainers Kevin and Janet Hall, of "Halls of Magic," will put on a show for the benefit of the animals in Manzanillo. Donations of any size will be taken at the door, and Martin of El Caribe will donate 40% of the proceeds from food and beverages to the fund.

Kevin and Janet will be "Going to the Dogs" on Friday, and proceeds will help the sterilization clinic purchase much needed medicines and supplies, such as vaccinations and treatments for various skin diseases prevalent among Manzanillo's dog and cat population.

Please call 333-0642 for more information, or El Caribe, 333-0800 for reservations.

This is the first time these entertainers have visited Manzanillo, and we'd like to make them feel welcome with a good turnout. They plan to return next year to do another benefit for the animals. Following dinner, at about 8:30, Freddy Acosta will entertain guests with his impersonations and ventriloquism, starring "Nicholas

     HISTORY OF MANZAMIGOS

Manzamigos  originated in 1999 as the brainchild of a collaboration between Guillermo Gomez of Tema Nissan and William (Bill) Zeiner, then U.S. consulate warden for the Costa Allegre & Manzanillo. It’s members at the time composed of the mayor of Manzanillo, Rogelio Rueda and all the heads of the principal departments that could possibly guide and assist the foreign visitors and residents to this principal Port City of Mexico. Several foreign residents were invited to attend and to then act as delegates and the voices of their countrymen. They included Marilyn Short, Deanna Cucci and Nigel & Freda Rumford.

A year later, 2000, with it obvious that the association of friends was not working as planned due to the multitude of commitments of both Guillermo Gomez & Rogelio Rueda, Nigel Rumford was elected unanimously as President . He held this position until resigning this year, 2008.

The first act of the new President was to incorporate the Association within the laws of Mexico and with the then five members remaining, Manzamigos A.C. was reborn.

From those humble beginnings, Manzamigos now has over 200 active members and is growing rapidly month by month as the benefits of belonging to a real community are becoming known and appreciated.

Manzamigos now has a web site, newsletters that are sent out monthly & mini newsletters which are sent out as frequently as weekly during the winter season. There are two helpful books available, one for shopping translations and the other with menus of over 40 restaurants in the area and Thirsty Thursday has become almost an institution in town. For the latter, Manzamigos and friends meet at local restaurants weekly for an evening of camaraderie and exchange of information.

Membership in Manzamigos A.C. is 250 pesos per annum for couples or singles
